Star tips are decorators' most commonly used tips. The piped shapes are baroque and sculptural and suit the decorative nature of ornamentation. Moreover, they can give a cake a beautiful appearance very quickly. They differ according to the number of points, their greater or smaller curvature inward of the opening, and the diameter of this opening. Their most important mission is to pipe borders, of which almost an endless amount can be created. As all decorators know, the border makes up much more than just the edge of the cake. The rhythmic curves of skillfully executed borders can often be the sole decoration of excellent cakes.

Primarily, but not exclusively, they are intended for simple piping of flowers of a predetermined shape and size.
